On 6 March 2025, 4 p.m. GMT Impressionist Futures Group will host Stephen F. Eisenman in conversation with Alexis Clark. All are welcomed to attend this virtual conversation by registering here.
Eisenman’s books and articles are required reading for all who wish to learn about French impressionism and post-impressionism, British art and design, and contemporary intersections of art and politics. Since his publication of ‘The Intransigent Artist, or How the Impressionists Got Their Name’ (1986) Eisenman has been in the vanguard of impressionism studies. In publication after publication, his scholarship has pushed us to see impressionism and its various ‘posts’ through a critical lens. Only now is impressionism studies starting to ask the types of questions that Eisenman has long raised in relation to ecology, animality, trans identity, indigeneity, imperialism, state power, and labor history. Alexis Clark will interview Stephen on the past, present, and future of Marxist approaches to impressionism studies and the importance of extending our academic work beyond the published page and brick-and-mortar classroom into politics – the domain of power.
