Part of this year’s Ways of Seeing programme, this online talk will focus on two major shifts of power in the late c19th home. Women were increasingly taking the lead in interior design and the consumption of domestic objects. They were required to design a safe, moral and tasteful home, providing the perfect room settings in which to stage their family’s social standing. This change happened in parallel with the early phases of the transition to lighting and heating our homes with gas and electricity.
And yet the history of the last great energy transition has been written as a history of men, technology and the city….
