Lecture: Catalan Culture and the Multilingual Translation of the Image, University of Edinburgh
- Region: Scotland
- Type: Talk
- Cost: Free
The department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Edinburgh is thrilled to announce the opening lecture to launch their new Catalan Studies pathway. The lecture will be given by Professor John London (Queen Mary University of London) and is titled ‘Catalan Culture and the Multilingual Translation of the Image’.
By taking a painting by Joan Miró as a starting point, this lecture asks a series of related questions about translating a culture.
How do you translate a foreign language within a source text? Does the author know best? What do you lose and gain by explanation?
For Espriu, it may be necessary to know Hebrew. For Calders, a Mexican context becomes important for a Catalan author. Perhaps the answers are in another painting, by Salvador Dalí. And is it possible to retain in English the Catalan identity of stories so dependent on their language of composition?
This event is sponsored by the Institut Ramon Llull.
Date: Thursday, October 31 – 4:30-5:30pm GMT
Location: 50 George Square Lecture Theatre (G.03), University of Edinburgh
