Assistant Professor in the History of Art, Architecture, and Visual Cultures of the Islamic World
The Art Department at Davidson College invites applications for the full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the History of Art, Architecture, and Visual Cultures of the Islamic World. We seek applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Art history faculty teach various course formats, from broad surveys to seminars in their areas of specialization to the senior capstone, which faculty teach in rotation. The ability to teach a methodology course is preferred. All faculty should contribute meaningfully to Davidson’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusive pedagogy. We are excited for this new faculty member to help transform the existing curriculum and introduce new course offerings that build on their teaching and research interests. Innovative teaching methods, including digital applications, are welcome.
Davidson values and supports faculty research. We seek applicants whose scholarship evidences the potential for a sustained contribution to the field. Scholars whose work brings cross-cultural approaches and diverse perspectives are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants whose research and teaching cross disciplinary boundaries are encouraged to highlight their interest in Africana Studies, Digital Humanities, the Humanities Program, Middle East Studies, Religious Studies, the Writing Program, and beyond.
Applicants must have completed all requirements of their Ph.D. by July 1, 2023. The teaching load is five courses per academic year (four courses in the first year for Assistant Professors). Additional duties include college and departmental committee work, advising majors and non-majors, and an interest in working with students inside and outside of the classroom, which may include study trips to view art and architecture first-hand.
Candidates must complete an online application at https://employment.davidson.edu and attach the following: a cover letter; a CV; graduate-school transcripts; a statement of teaching interests explaining the candidate’s demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate teaching; a statement of research interests; and a statement outlining how the candidate’s teaching, service, and research might contribute to Davidson College’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion. Also include email contact information for three references from whom our system can solicit letters of recommendation for semifinalists. Additionally, semifinalists will be asked to provide a scholarly writing sample. Questions may be sent to Cort Savage, Chair and Professor of Art, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
