Assistant Professor of Non-Western Art History (tenure track), University of Texas at Tyler
Job Summary
The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor with a specialization in non-western art history, beginning fall 2024. The successful candidate will be the third art historian whose specialization will complement those of the other two art history professors in the department. The area of focus can be pre-1900 art from East Asia (including China or Japan), Southeast Asia, Africa, Oceanian cultures, or pre-contact indigenous peoples from North, Central and/ or South America. A general knowledge of global art history is a must. Additionally, some experience with museum, curatorial and/or film studies is desirable. The ability to also teach some western art courses is preferable. The successful applicant should be well-organized, have strong communication skills – especially as related to dynamic and engaging teaching, and excellent time-management abilities. This position requires effective teamwork and collaboration with colleagues. This is a full-time position that may require in-person presence on the UT Tyler main campus five days a week.

Essential Functions
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Teach three (3) courses per semester.
- Courses taught may include: Survey of Non-Western Art (lower- and upper-level / graduate), Art and Film, Introduction to Art, Art History Survey I and II (Global: prehistoric to contemporary), Exhibition Practicum, Curatorial Studies, and other combined upper-level / graduate-level catalog or special topics courses as needed in field of specialization.
- Engaging in research and scholarly activities consistent with rank.
- Service to the department, college, university, and profession.
- Service to the department may include: Academic advising for undergraduate and/or graduate students, supervising BA art history graduating senior thesis papers and presentations, supervising MA art history theses or comprehensive exams, serve as faculty mentor to art history students, participate in mid-term graduate studio visits and end of semester graduate critiques, serving on MA and/or MFA graduate committees, serving on a variety of university and departmental committees, working with community organizations (such as the Tyler Museum of Art) to oversee student internships, supervising of the art and art history student organization, participating in departmental, university and community sponsored events, and organizing student museum visits or guest lecturer programs.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Art History in hand by August 1, 2024.
- Specialization in field of non-western art history.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate or post-graduate teaching experience.
- Experience with Canvas.
- Experience with online/full distance and face-to-face delivery modes.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
