Assistant Professor: Shireen and Afzal Ahmad Professorship in South Asian Art
The Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in South Asian art generously endowed by Dr. Shireen and Dr. Afzal Ahmad to begin August 2024. This is a university-year endowed appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position may be filled by persons working in the field of South Asia broadly with a preference for those whose research and teaching focus on modern and/or contemporary South Asian art, pursuing any methodological approach/es. Applicants must have earned the Ph.D. by the starting date of employment. The successful applicant will be asked to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise doctoral students, undertake service appropriate to the rank, and participate actively in the events of the department. The appointee will be welcomed into a large university community that encourages interdisciplinary dialogue and is committed to the core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Applicants should provide a cover letter, CV, statement of current and future research plans, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching excellence, a writing sample (35-40 pages maximum) and names and contact details of three referees from whom letters of recommendation may be requested. We also require a personal statement outlining the applicant’s engagement with diversity, equity, and inclusion in research/scholarship, teaching/mentoring and service.
