Call for Papers | Nordic Art // Global Contexts

2-4th May 2019

Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study Annual Conference, Madison, Wisconsin

“Nordic Art // Global Contexts” invites an interdisciplinary and international discussion on the history and future of Scandinavian art and visual culture. This thematic stream encourages papers from a broad range of disciplines including, but not limited to, art history, curatorial and cultural studies, and anthropology, to better understand the transnational scholarly discourse animating visual and material culture of the Nordic nations. They are interested in panels and papers that focus on both the specificity of Scandinavian art, culture, and “national identity,” as well as research that investigates inter-European and wider transatlantic relationships.

This stream traverses period, style, and genre; encouraging the presentation of new research, new methods, and interdisciplinary discussion from the Viking and early Christian era, through the height of Scandinavian modernism, to contemporary interventions. Papers/panels are invited that propose new perspectives on the state of research in Scandinavian visual and material culture.

This stream presents an opportunity to reconsider the impact of Scandinavian arts and culture on the global stage, resisting the rhetoric of regional or national exceptionalism in order to highlight questions of encounter and exchange.
