Call for Submissions

The Saturated Space Research Cluster at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (http://www.saturatedspace.org/) is looking for exciting new articles about architecture, urbanism and space in which colour is the central protagonist. We are keen to gather wildly divergent takes on the topic – especially queer approaches – but always illuminated through the prism of colour (avoiding black, white and grey).

Previous explorations have included: Mark Jarzombek on iconographic ruptures between the spiritual and real world via the pigments of the earth; Jacob Reidel on colour as an instrument to convey notions of gravitas, power and narrative; John McCartin on the colour of Coade stone in various areas of Baltimore as signifiers of ethnic urban geography and economic transformation; Will Wiles exploring Hi Viz colours as potent and complex political signifiers; and Charles Holland identifying colour as a tool for psychological grounding in Adolf Loos’ deployment of his Raumplan.

We have had an extraordinary range of previous contributors. Texts tend to be c. 1500-3000 words. We publish them on an ad hoc basis and offer a small fee of £100 per contribution.

If you are interested in contributing, please send <400 word abstracts to Dr. Joshua Mardell by 31 January 2022: joshua.mardell@york.ac.uk
