Chair of Board of Trustees

The Association for Art History leads the collective effort in the UK to advance the study and professional practice of art history.  Through our programmes, publications and resources we connect those engaged with art history, and we advocate on behalf of the subject, stressing its importance in a well-rounded education and influencing relevant policy.

With a new, three-year strategic plan in place, a dedicated and energised board and a committed staff, the Association is poised to extend its reach and build on the success overseen by our outgoing Chair, Christine Riding, Head of Curatorial at the National Gallery.  Our objectives are to strengthen the subject and support people in the broad art history community including teachers, researchers, students, museum and art market professionals and those with a personal interest in the subject.

We seek a Chair for our Board of Trustees who has an interest in seeing art history thrive in the UK, who is sympathetic to our mission and values, and who has formally engaged with our subject at an advanced level.  As the leader of the Board, the incumbent should have non-executive experience and knowledge of governance responsibilities as well as strategic leadership experience and involvement with organisational change and a growth agenda at a senior level.  Importantly, the new Chair should also be willing to help the organisation extend its networks and be comfortable using those networks to enhance our fundraising and advocacy work. The time commitment for this role is estimated at one day per month.

The Association works to encourage diversity in our field and to increase access to art history regardless of economic or social strata, location, age, race or ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.  We therefore welcome applications which reflect a variety of experience and personal circumstance.

The deadline for applications is 10 April 2019.

To apply for this post, we ask that you send a CV and a letter outlining your interest in the Association and the pertinent skills or experience you would bring to the Chair’s post to info@forarthistory.org.uk.  The deadline for applications is 10 April 2019.

If you are considering an application and have questions about the Board or the organisation please contact the CEO, Gregory Perry, at Gregory@forarthistory.org.uk or at 020 740 3211 for a confidential conversation.  Contact with current board members can also be arranged.
