The department of Art History at Rice University invites scholars working on the art, architecture, and/or visual/material culture of Africa to apply for a one-year Nancy and Robert J. Carney Postdoctoral Associateship in Art History, with the possibility for a second-year renewal. Scholars working within transcultural frameworks and across time periods are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those whose work might intersect with that being done in interdisciplinary programs and centers at Rice, including (but not limited to) those in Medical Humanities, Medieval & Early Modern Studies, Environmental Studies, African and African American Studies, Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations, and the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.
The successful candidate’s primary responsibility during their time at Rice will be to make substantial progress on their own research and writing projects and to engage with the university’s diverse intellectual community. The successful candidate will be paired with a faculty mentor and be expected to present work-in-progress to occasional campus audiences. In addition, they will teach one course each semester related to their ongoing research and may take part in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The Department of Art History at Rice offers programs of study leading to both the BA and PhD degrees, and has close working relations with nearby museums including the Menil Collection and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
This is a full-time, residential associateship starting July 1, 2024. The postdoctoral associate will receive a salary of $70,000 and a stipend of $3,000 to be used for research and/or relocation to Houston, as well as standard benefits.
Eligibility:
Candidates must hold a PhD in Art History or a related field by July 1, 2024, the start of the appointment. The eligibility window for applicants is within seven (7) years of conferral of PhD.
