Association for Art History | Seeking New Trustees

The Association for Art History leads the collective effort in the UK to advance the study and professional practice of art history. Through our programmes, publications and resources we connect those engaged with art history, and we advocate on behalf of the subject, stressing its importance in a well-rounded education and influencing relevant policy.

Our current strategy outlines how we will strengthen the subject and support all those in the broad art history community including, among others, academics and students in the higher education sector, teachers in pre-university education, professionals in public and commercial galleries and those who have a personal interest in the subject.

The Association is governed by a committed board of eleven Trustees from various backgrounds and interests in art history. The board is chaired by Frances Fowle, Professor of Nineteenth-Century Art at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh and Senior Curator of French Art at the National Galleries of Scotland.

To help us deliver our strategy, we would like to add Trustees into the organisation with the following skills and backgrounds:

  • Digital Strategy

The Association will develop a digital strategy in 2021 for inclusion in its upcoming strategic plan for 2022-2024. We invite applications from those who have particular expertise in this area, whether gained in an arts field, in digital humanities or on a broader strategic level from within the education or charities sectors.

  • Equality Diversity and Inclusion

With EDI training and the creation of a related action plan this year, the organisation is committed to ensuring that everyone who wants to engage with art history has the opportunity to do so, regardless of economic or social strata, location, age, race or ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. We encourage those to apply who have a background in EDI who are able to help us drive diversity—regarding the range of protected characteristics—throughout the organisation, from the board to our activities and our networks.

  • Art Market

We seek those who have a broad knowledge of the art market and insight into its current trends. This may include art market specialists from the world of publishing or journalism, auction house professionals or others who may be able to assist with expanding our reach into the commercial sector where art history is practiced.

The full board meets four times per year with several additional board committees supporting specific governance functions. Membership is on a voluntary basis with travel expenses to meetings and events reimbursed. With the move to virtual meetings, however, we intend to convene some of the board meetings each year via video.

We invite applications in all the above-specified areas from those with a variety of experience, personal characteristics or circumstance.
