About the Role 

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (PMC) is looking for a Membership and Communications Assistant to support the delivery of the Centre’s networks. The PMC’s networks connect and support researchers who are engaging with British art in its broadest sense, at different stages of their working lives. The networks currently include the Doctoral Researchers Network (DRN), Early Career Researchers Network (ECRN) and the British Art Network (BAN), a subject-specialist network supported by PMC in partnership with Tate. The programming and development of each network is led by a convenor: annually appointed external convenors in the case of the ECRN and DRN; the Head of Grants, Fellowships and Networks in the case of BAN. Additionally, the PMC Networks team run programmes and events to support the vocational development of emerging researchers and professionals, including the British Art in Motion film competition and the Art Trade Seminar. 

Salary will be £22,400 per annum (pro rata’d from £28,000 per annum) 

This post is a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2024, part-time and hours of work are 28 per week. Applicants will be expected to work on site at the Paul Mellon Centre, 16 Bedford Square, London WC1 (or remotely as circumstances demand). We are happy to talk about flexible working arrangements offered by the Centre.

Responsibilities include: 


  • Managing membership databases for all the networks 
  • Processing membership applications 
  • For BAN, processing member profiles for online publication 
  • Dealing with general enquiries about PMC’s networks and related activities 

Website and Communications 

  • Liaising with the web developer to ensure the maintenance and smooth running of BAN’s website 
  • Editing and updating BAN’s website, including maintaining the Member Directory and updating network pages on the PMC website 
  • Delivering and developing BAN’s social media presence and marketing 
  • Working with the PMC team in developing content for marketing 

Person Specification: 

  • Proven organisational and time-management skills with an ability to meet deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail 
  • Experience of working with databases 
  • Meticulous attention to detail and experience working with administrative processes 
  • High degree of computer literacy, with experience of web development, content generation, managing social media and communications 
  • Good numerical skills and written communication skills 
  • Adaptable and able to remain calm and focused while working under pressure 
  • A collaborative approach to teamworking as well as proven ability to work proactively and independently 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues and external contacts 
  • Understanding of the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity and the ability to apply and promote these in practice at work 
  • Appreciation of a range of access needs and practical experience of helping create accessible working environments and/or events 
  • An understanding of BAN’s work and objectives and its context in the cultural sector
