Art Decades – I’ll Be Your Mirror

Taking inspiration from your forebears in any art form is inescapable but there are shameless copyists out there in many disciplines. The ethics may at first seem clear-cut: deliberately imitating another artist’s work could be classed sacrilegious, but Michelangelo blithely copied fellow masters and sometimes kept originals; if Bruegel the Younger hadn’t assiduously copied his father, Winter Landscape with Skaters may have been lost to history. The latest in the Art Decades series, describing how music intersects with other art forms, explores this fraught topic and asks if music is the worst culprit, or cinema, or indeed art –it also identifies some unconscious influences that dominate artists’ lives and careers and shape their oeuvres.
