Memory Activism Through Visual Art – Artists from Russia after 2022
Date: Thursday, 25 June 2026
Time: 13:30–15:30 CEST
Venue: Room A 227, FTSK Germersheim, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Online participation: https://uni-mainz-de.zoom.us/j/65004801105?pwd=QxpAZAyvm48f9lVrM3dIHSnbabuRI4.1
Language: English

Drawing on memory studies scholarship, in particular the concepts of memory activism and memory (re)mediation, this presentation moves beyond viewing Russian artists who left the country after 2022 solely as anti-war advocates and political protesters. It highlights another crucial dimension of their work: their role in documenting, producing, and mediating cultural memory through visual artistic practices.
The lecture is part of the MALVA Center’s ongoing series “Umkämpftes Gedächtnis / Confronting Memory”, which addresses contested memory, cultural mediation, and the ways in which societies remember, narrate, and process violence, displacement, and political rupture.
Participation is free and open to all. No registration is required.
