On Thursday May 7th we’ll be joined by Renee Adams, Professor of Finance at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. At our conference in January, Professor Adams participated in a panel on gender and value bias and the catalogue raisonné; this Spotlight is an opportunity to hear her expand on the fascinating and timely points she raised.
Adams says, “I provide economic evidence that women’s art is undervalued in the art market because it is produced by women. My data suggests that art market intermediaries may perpetuate this undervaluation. My findings raise important questions about the role of catalogues raisonnés in perpetuating art market inequality. If women artists’ lower prices and visibility lead to the production of fewer catalogues raisonnés for women, does the absence of catalogues raisonnés for women artists reinforce the mistaken belief that they produce art of lower value?”

Join us online on May 7th at 4pm BST – tickets are free for ICRA members.
