Arris journal of architecture, landscape, & preservation

Arris is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original scholarship on all aspects of the history of architecture and preservation. Founded in 1989, Arris is published annually by the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH), a regional chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. SESAH promotes scholarship on architecture and related subjects and serves as a forum for ideas among architectural historians, architects, preservationists, and others involved in professions related to the built environment. Although the journal has historically centered new perspectives on the U.S. South, we are particularly interested in expanding the publication’s geographical scope.

Arris is available in print and online and is published in partnership with the University of North Carolina Press. The full text of all past issues of Arris is free to SESAH members via a password-protected portal and available to non-members via Project MUSE.

Call for Papers: Articles and Field Notes
Arris, the journal of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH), is accepting submissions for articles and field notes to be published in upcoming issues.

Articles generally run from 5,000-7,000 words and are blind peer-reviewed.

Field notes are shorter contributions, approximately 2,500 words in length, and are blind peer-reviewed. These notes discuss ongoing field work or other research of interest to SESAH members. Arris welcomes contributions from preservationists, archivists, and museum professionals discussing current projects and methods.
Only original work neither published previously nor under review for publication elsewhere will be considered.

For the 2027 issue of Arris, the deadline to receive article submissions is October 1, 2026. If an article or field notes essay is accepted, but the issue in progress already has a sufficient number of them, it will be published in the next issue.
