UKRI Open Access Response and Resources

The Association for Art History has been fully engaged in the consideration of and response to the newly-proposed UKRI Open Access policy.

We have represented the interests of art historians at meetings with UKRI policy makers and leaders and have consulted with stakeholders, particularly about securing permissions to reproduce images from third-party rights holders. This work culminated in our response to the UKRI Open Access review. We have included that here with two other documents you may find of use.

Here is a summary on open access publishing and its import for those in our field; for those unfamiliar with this issue, it can serve as an introduction to the full consultation response as can the list of the types of rights vis-à-vis open access publishing granted by various prominent rights holders in the visual arts, which we’ve included below. UKRI will hold a consultation on a new REF policy this autumn and will publish its new policy next spring. We will keep you abreast of open access policy and requirements as they develop.

The Association for Art History has collected information on the types of licences offered by rights holders in the visual arts.  These include galleries, museums, libraries and image databases.  This list is by no means exhaustive but includes rights holders in the UK and internationally which art historians frequently use. Here are some licences offered by various prominent rights holders.
